NEW: Edit Chords and MD Notes in ChartBuilder

Change, add, nudge or delete chords and add or change Section MD Notes from a multitracks.com catalog chart, directly in ChartBuilder.

Written by Trevor

This feature is currently only available in ChartBuilder 5.0.0 which is in beta.

Chord editing lets you change the chords on a MultiTracks chart to fit your team. Your changes save to a custom chart, so the original MultiTracks chart stays untouched.

What you can do

  • Change a chord, by typing it or picking a suggested chord

  • Add a chord anywhere over the lyrics

  • Add a chord right before or after an existing chord

  • Nudge a chord left or right

  • Delete a chord

  • Add or edit the MD Note on a song section

Before you start

  • Chord editing works on MultiTracks catalog charts.

  • It is not available on charts from an uploaded PDF, on placeholder charts or on cloud songs.

  • It's not currently available for MT Complete songs.

  • You edit and choose custom charts in the ChartBuilder app only. The MultiTracks website and Playback do not let you pick a custom chart yet.

Who can edit chords

  • Campus Admins and Org Admins can edit any custom chart.

  • Team Leaders can edit chords only on custom charts they created. If a Team Leader opens someone else's custom chart, ChartBuilder offers to make them a copy to edit.

  • Team Members cannot edit chords. They still have the Annotations menu.

Open the chord editor

  1. Open a setlist, then open the song's chart.

  2. Tap Edit in the top right corner.

  3. A panel on the right side of the screen shows two options: Annotations and Chords. Annotations is selected by default, so tap Chords.

The chords now appear in outlined boxes. The top bar shows undo and redo arrows and Revert on the left, the name of your custom chart in the middle, and Done on the right. Tap Done when you are finished editing the chords and MD Notes

Edit a chord

  1. Tap the chord you want to change. A menu opens with Edit, Nudge, Add Chord Before, Add Chord After and a delete option.

  2. Tap Edit. The Edit Chord window opens.

  3. Type the chord name in the box, or tap one of the Suggested Chords below it.

  4. Tap Save. Tap Cancel to close the window without changing the chord.

Add a chord

  1. Tap any open space on the chart where you want the chord. ChartBuilder asks you to add a chord there.

  2. Type the chord or pick a suggested chord, then save.

The chord always goes over the words. If you tap far to the right of the lyric, the chord snaps to the end of the words.

To place a chord very close to one that is already there, tap the existing chord, then tap Add Chord Before or Add Chord After.

Nudge a chord

  1. Tap the chord, then tap Nudge.

  2. Arrows appear above the chord. Tap the left or right arrow to move the chord.

  3. Tap Done when the chord is where you want it.

Delete a chord

Tap the chord, then tap the delete option. The chord is removed right away, and ChartBuilder does not ask you to confirm. If you delete one by mistake, tap Undo in the top left corner.

Add or edit an MD Note

MD Notes are the short notes at the top of a song section, like "Dynamics down" or "All in." Your changes save to the custom chart and sync with it.

  1. In Chords mode, tap the edit icon in the top right of the song section.

  2. Type a new note, or change the existing one.

Fix a mistake

  • Undo and redo: use the arrows in the top left corner to step back and forward through your edits. This works if you delete a chord or add the wrong one.

  • Edit the chord: tap it, then tap Edit and choose the right chord.

  • Revert: tap Revert to change everything in the custom chart back to the default chart. ChartBuilder asks you to confirm first. All changes are undone, and you cannot undo a revert. Use Save as New first if you want to keep your edits.

Your changes save automatically

Each chord you save goes straight into your selected custom chart. There is no separate Save button for the chart.

The first time you edit a chart, ChartBuilder creates a custom chart named My Custom Chart 1 and switches to it. Each new custom chart adds one to the number: My Custom Chart 2, My Custom Chart 3, and so on.

Manage your custom charts

You can keep more than one custom chart for a song. Tap the chart name at the top of the screen to open My Custom Charts. From there you can:

  • Create New Custom Chart: start a new custom chart from the original chart.

  • Save as New: save a copy of the chart you are editing, with your edits, as a new custom chart. Use this when you want a new version that starts from your current edits instead of the original.

  • Switch charts: tap a chart in the list. The blue check mark shows the one you are editing.

Rename or delete a custom chart

  1. In My Custom Charts, tap Edit in the top right corner.

  2. To rename a chart, tap the pencil-and-paper icon beside its name and type the new name.

  3. To delete a chart, tap the red minus button beside its name, then confirm. If you delete the chart you are editing, ChartBuilder opens the default chart.

  4. Tap Done.

Custom charts are separate from the custom arrangements you save for songs. Changing one does not change the other.

The cloud icon with a slash

You may see a cloud icon with a slash beside a custom chart. It means the chart has changes that have not uploaded yet. ChartBuilder syncs your edits in real time and retries behind the scenes, so you do not need to do anything. Keep editing. If the icon stays for a long time, check that your device is online.

Choose which chart a setlist uses

Admins and Team Leaders choose the chart a song opens to in a setlist. Team members will see the selected chart by default when they open the setlist.

  1. Open the song in the setlist.

  2. Tap the gear icon at the top right to open Settings.

  3. On the Chart Settings tab, tap the Chart Selection menu.

  4. Choose the default chart, a custom chart, or a PDF you uploaded.

  5. Tap Done, then save the setlist.

  • Save the setlist so your team gets the change. The pick reaches your team only after a Team Leader or an admin saves the setlist.

  • Setlists open to the default chart until someone picks a different one.

  • Custom charts belong to your organization. The same custom chart is available in other setlists that use the song.

  • You can pick a chart in the ChartBuilder app only. You cannot pick one from the MultiTracks website or Playback yet.

Troubleshooting

I don't see Chords in the Edit panel. Team Members cannot edit chords, and Edit opens the Annotations menu for them. Also check the chart type. Chord editing does not show on PDF charts, placeholder charts or cloud songs, and on MT Complete it works on single-genre charts only.

I can't edit this custom chart. If you are a Team Leader, you can edit only custom charts you created. Accept the copy ChartBuilder offers, then edit the copy. Campus Admins and Org Admins can edit any chart.

My teammate doesn't see my changes. Open Chart Settings and make sure your custom chart is selected for the song, then save the setlist. Team members see the chart saved with the setlist, not the one you were editing.

The cloud icon with a slash won't go away. Check your internet connection. ChartBuilder keeps retrying the upload in the background, so keep your device online and the app open.

I edited the wrong chart. Tap the chart name at the top to check which custom chart is selected. Use undo, or Revert to start that chart over.
