What works on your ToneX device
Every ToneX device plays MultiTracks Tone Models and loads MultiTracks Impulse Responses. The difference between devices is how many models you can carry and how many run at once. All of them load sounds from the same computer library, so one MultiTracks purchase covers every ToneX device you own.
Device | MultiTracks Tone Models | MultiTracks Impulse Responses | Onboard storage | Models at once | Editor |
ToneX Board | Yes: Amp, Stomp, and Cab models | Yes | 1,440 presets (12 setlists) | Up to 4 (amp and stomp on each of 2 paths) | ToneX Board Editor |
ToneX Pedal | Yes | Yes | 150 presets | 1 | ToneX Editor |
ToneX ONE | Yes | Yes | 20 presets | 1 | ToneX Editor |
ToneX Plug | Yes | Yes | Small preset bank | 1 | ToneX app / Editor |
ToneX for Mac/PC and plug-in | Yes | Yes | Unlimited (your computer) | Per your session | ToneX for Mac/PC |
ToneX devices play ToneX Tone Models only. They do not load Kemper, Neural DSP, Line 6, or NAM captures.
Know your device
All ToneX hardware runs IK's AI Machine Modeling engine, so a MultiTracks Tone Model sounds the same on every unit. What changes is the controls, the storage, and which editor you use.
ToneX Board. IK's newest and most capable unit, a full pedalboard released in 2026. It runs up to four Tone Models at once across two signal paths (an amp model and a stomp model on each), with 70+ built-in effects, a Custom IR loader, and room for 1,440 presets. It uses its own app, ToneX Board Editor, and separates its libraries into Amp, Stomp, and Cab Tone Models. MultiTracks presets built for the Board use the dual-path layout; presets for the single-model pedals load into one path.
ToneX Pedal. The original three-switch floor pedal: one Tone Model per preset, 150 presets, VIR cabinets, Custom IR loader, and onboard effects. Managed with ToneX Editor.
ToneX ONE. A mini pedal with the same engine: 20 presets, three slots for live use, A/B or Stomp mode, VIR and Custom IR loading. Managed with ToneX Editor. It is the most common ToneX device on worship pedalboards because it sits next to your existing pedals.
ToneX Plug. A headphone amp for practice. It plays the same Tone Models from your library and loads MultiTracks Impulse Responses, so you can rehearse with the exact MultiTracks tones you play on Sunday.
ToneX for Mac/PC and the ToneX plug-in. The software player, librarian, and modeler. This is where your MultiTracks Tone Models live before they go to any hardware, and you can play them directly in your DAW or in AmpliTube.
Before you start
Everything on ToneX runs through one installer: IK Product Manager. Install it first, and it handles the software, the editors, and firmware.
Create or log in to your IK Multimedia account at ikmultimedia.com and register your ToneX hardware. Registration unlocks the software that came with it.
Download and install IK Product Manager for macOS or Windows. Use it to install ToneX for Mac/PC. ToneX Editor (Pedal and ONE) is included with ToneX for Mac/PC; ToneX Board Editor is a selectable option in the same installer.
Connect your hardware by USB and open its editor. The editor checks the firmware and walks you through any update. Update the software first, then the firmware.
Unzip your MultiTracks download. It contains Tone Model or preset files (.txp, and .txm for ToneX Board stomp models), IR files (.wav) where the pack includes them, and a readme listing each model, its type, and suggested settings.
The free ToneX SE license that ships with most hardware is enough to load, play, and transfer MultiTracks Tone Models. You do not need ToneX MAX to use our packs.
Downloads, manuals, and editor software
IK delivers all software and firmware through IK Product Manager, available from ikmultimedia.com. Manuals are on each product page and in the IK user area after you register.
Device | Editor (free) | How firmware updates | Manual |
ToneX Board | ToneX Board Editor, installed with ToneX for Mac/PC | Built into ToneX Board Editor; it prompts when the Board needs an update | ToneX Board product page and the Board Editor user manual |
ToneX Pedal | ToneX Editor, installed with ToneX for Mac/PC | ToneX Editor over USB | ToneX Pedal user manual on the IK product page |
ToneX ONE | ToneX Editor | ToneX Editor over USB | ToneX ONE user manual on the IK product page |
ToneX Plug | ToneX Editor | Through the editor | |
ToneX for Mac/PC | IK Product Manager installs and updates it | n/a | ToneX for Mac/PC user manual |
Also useful: ToneNET, IK's free Tone Model sharing platform, built into ToneX for Mac/PC.
Update ToneX for Mac/PC through Product Manager first, then let the editor update the hardware. Presets saved with newer software may not load on older firmware.
What a Tone Model is, and what you get in a MultiTracks ToneX pack
A Tone Model is IK's capture format. ToneX's AI Machine Modeling sends test signals through a real amp, pedal, or full rig, learns how it responds, and builds a model of that gear at those exact settings. Like every capture format, it is a snapshot: one amp, one channel, one gain setting. Every MultiTracks Tone Model is captured in our studio from the real gear used on the records.
A Tone Model can include different parts of the rig, and the readme tells you which each one is:
Amp + Cab (full rig) includes the speaker and microphone. Complete on its own; leave the cabinet set to the model's own cab.
Amp (DI) captures the amp through a load box, with no speaker. Pair it with a MultiTracks IR, or a VIR cabinet.
Stomp captures an overdrive, distortion, fuzz, or boost. On ToneX Board, stomp models run in their own slot in front of an amp model; on the single-model pedals, a stomp model fills the one model slot.
What to expect from a MultiTracks ToneX pack: several Tone Models of the same amp at different gain settings, so one pack covers clean through lead; ready-made presets (.txp) with the model, cab or IR, and effects dialed in; matching MultiTracks IRs for any DI models; and a readme with the amp, cab, mic, model type, and suggested input settings.
MultiTracks ToneX exclusives. Some MultiTracks amp-capture collections are released only in ToneX format. These are marked as ToneX exclusives on the product page.
Loading Tone Models and presets
Every MultiTracks ToneX file goes into your computer library first, then onto the hardware. Load the IRs from the pack before the presets that use them; ToneX Pedal and ONE also import a preset's Custom IR automatically when it is embedded.
ToneX Board (ToneX Board Editor)
Connect the Board by USB and open ToneX Board Editor.
Choose the library category at the top of the window: Amp Tone Models, Stomp Tone Models, Cab Tone Models, or Presets.
Drag the MultiTracks files into the Computer Library: .txp files into Amp or Presets, .txm files into Stomp. The editor rejects files dropped into the wrong category.
Select the items you want on the Board and drag them into the Hardware Library. Drag presets directly onto the preset slots where you want them.
Play the preset on the Board and confirm the readme's model, cab, and effects are in place.
ToneX Pedal and ToneX ONE (ToneX Editor)
Connect the pedal by USB and open ToneX Editor (or the Librarian tab in ToneX for Mac/PC).
Drag the MultiTracks .txp files into your computer library. They appear under Presets and Tone Models with the MultiTracks name.
Drag a preset onto a hardware slot. Use the auto-load button to audition it through the pedal before you commit.
On ToneX ONE, you have 20 slots; choose the presets you need for the set and swap others in for the next service.
Save to the pedal.
ToneX Plug
Load presets from the same computer library with the Plug's editor. Your MultiTracks models are already in the library from step 2 above.
ToneX for Mac/PC and plug-in
Open ToneX, drag the MultiTracks .txp files into the library, and play them directly. In a DAW, insert the ToneX plug-in and pick the MultiTracks preset from the same library.
Loading Impulse Responses
ToneX gives every preset three cabinet choices: the Tone Model's own captured cab (MODEL), IK's VIR cabinets, or a Custom IR. MultiTracks IRs load as Custom IRs.
Open ToneX Board Editor (Board), ToneX Editor (Pedal, ONE), or ToneX for Mac/PC.
In the cabinet section of a preset, choose Custom IR and import the MultiTracks .wav file. On ToneX Board Editor you can also drag .wav files into the Cab library first.
Select the MultiTracks IR for that preset and save it to the hardware. The IR travels with the preset.
On ToneX Pedal, you can switch cab types from the pedal: press the MODEL encoder, select CAB, then choose MODEL, VIR, or IR. The IR category only appears once at least one Custom IR is on the pedal.
Use a MultiTracks IR with Amp (DI) models. With an Amp + Cab model, leave the cab on MODEL; adding an IR on top doubles the speaker and sounds muffled.
Making it sound like the demo
Tone Models respond to input level like a real amp. Match the level and the routing, and the preset will land close to the demo.
Input trim. On ToneX Pedal, ToneX ONE, ToneX Plug, and ToneX for Mac/PC, we recommend setting the input trim between 0 and 3 dB. Where you land in that range depends on your guitar: hotter pickups drive the model harder, lower-output pickups less. Most players use ToneX as an amp sim behind a board of drives, boosts, and compressors, and those pedals should manage your gain staging, not the trim. Even if a preset feels too hot, too clean, or too crunchy, stay inside 0 to 3 dB and adjust with your pedals, your guitar's volume, or the preset's Gain. Experiment within the range and set it to taste. ToneX Board has its own input rules; see the note below this list.
Cab on, once. Going direct to front-of-house or headphones, keep the cab on (MODEL for full-rig models, Custom IR for DI models). Going into a guitar amp's front input, turn the cab off on the output that feeds the amp, or use the amp's effects return.
Output level. Send the outputs at line level to front-of-house or your interface. On ToneX Board, set each path's output so the two paths balance before you adjust any preset.
Global EQ and effects flat. Reset global EQ while auditioning. Our presets include the effects they need; extra global effects change every preset.
ToneX Board input. If you plug your guitar straight into the Board and use it as your whole rig, leave the input trim at its standard 8.5 dB. If the Board sits inside a larger pedalboard, with drives, boosts, or compressors in front of it, dial the trim back to the same 0 to +3 dB range we recommend for the other ToneX units, and let your pedals manage the gain.
On every ToneX device, treat these numbers as the starting point for demo-accurate tone, not a rule. Your guitar, your pickups, the pedals in front, and your speakers or front-of-house system all change how a preset sounds. Start in the recommended range, account for those variables, and then trust your ears and your hands. If it feels and sounds right to you, it is right.
Then adjust in this order: the preset's Gain for feel, the cab's low and high cut for the room (roughly 80 to 100 Hz and 8 to 10 kHz for a direct worship mix), and the preset Volume so it matches your other presets.
Troubleshooting and FAQ
The editor will not accept my file. You dropped it into the wrong library. On ToneX Board Editor, .txm files go into Stomp Tone Models and .txp files into Amp Tone Models or Presets. Also confirm ToneX for Mac/PC is up to date.
The preset sounds thin and fizzy. It uses a DI (amp-only) model and the cab is off or empty. Set the cab to Custom IR and select the MultiTracks IR named in the readme.
It sounds muffled. You have an IR or VIR after a full-rig model, or the cab is on while you feed a guitar amp's front input. Set the cab back to MODEL, or turn the cab off on that output.
It breaks up too early or not enough. Set the input trim between 0 and 3 dB to suit your pickups (ToneX Board has its own rules), then manage gain with your pedals, your guitar's volume, or the preset's Gain rather than pushing the trim outside that range.
I ran out of slots on my ToneX ONE. The ONE holds 20 presets. Keep the full pack in your computer library and swap presets in per service with ToneX Editor.
Do I need ToneX MAX? No. The SE license that ships with ToneX hardware loads, plays, and transfers MultiTracks Tone Models.
Will my MultiTracks ToneX Pedal presets work on ToneX Board? Yes. They load into one signal path of the Board. Presets built for the Board's dual-path layout do not fit the single-model pedals; load the individual Tone Models from the pack instead.
Can I use MultiTracks Tone Models in my DAW? Yes, in ToneX for Mac/PC or the ToneX plug-in, from the same library.
Can I load MultiTracks NAM, Kemper, or Neural captures? No. ToneX plays ToneX Tone Models only. Buy the ToneX version of a pack.
